Cravings and Aversions (8 weeks)

My cravings:
Fried Cabbage
Lemon flavored anything
Beer

All of which I find disgusting when I'm not pregnant. I've given in to the cabbage and lemon stuff, but obviously the beer is not something I can have. Looks sooooo tempting though!

My Aversions:
Vanilla candles
Coffee

Both are things I absolutely LOVE when I'm not pregnant. Go figure. :o)

First Prenatal Appointment

I had my first prenatal appointment today. I am 7 weeks, 6 days pregnant today. My due date is November 8th. My doctor (actually I saw a nurse) ordered up an early ultrasound to make sure my due date is correct, a whole list of standard pregnancy bloodwork and an early glucose test. Normally that wonderful little ditty is done between 24-28 weeks, but with my history of gigantic babies (anything over 9lbs is "big") they like to freak out and watch me closer for gestational diabetes so I get tested more often than normal. Thankfully, my office is just now in the midst of switching the testing methods so I'm going through a one hour test this time. When I get to the standard 24-28 week test, it will be the new mandatory 2hr test. Not looking forward to holding that sick sugary glop down for 2 whole hours. Sounds like an eternity.

7 weeks, 6 days:

While sitting here waiting for the pictures to upload I was thinking. Both David and Max were born at 39 weeks. If this baby follows tradition (or is as large as his/her brothers) I could very easily end up with a Halloween baby. I HATE the idea of my baby sharing it's birthday with a holiday. Birthdays are special and they deserve a day all their own. Also not loving the idea of taking my boys trick-or-treating while HUGELY pregnant. This is a lose-lose. :P

The Target dollar section does it again!

David and I entered Target last night intent on searching out a new digital camera {he got bored of sitting home and getting healthy}, but I was instantly side tracked by the new spring arrivals to the dollar section. Isn't that always how it goes? That bargain section has got it going on!! They didn't end up having a camera that we were happy with, but I didn't walk away empty handed. No, sir. I am now the proud owner of these bad boys...

Operation: Get Healthy!

It's been all snotty noses and sore throats {and 1 case of runny poo} this week at the Sager's. We're just about over being sick I'll tell you that! Today we are staying home, disinfecting everything in sight with Lysol, watching movies, eating homemade chicken noodle soup and cuddling in our jammies. It's about time we got healthy and stayed that way!

Baby bump???

Now, I've never had a flat stomach by any means and maybe it's just me, but is my fat roll starting to look a little like a baby bump? I'm only 7-8 weeks!!! Yeesh. I've sidelined 3 pairs of my jeans and a button up shirt because they are too tight and I've let my belt out a notch already. Um, isn't this a bit early???

What do you do at the breakfast table?

I don't know where little David ever saw laser guns in the first place, but one day he started shooting at Max during dinner. Max has learned in his short life that it's best to be aggressive back when attacked so he sent them flying right back across the table. Most meals are now eaten during intense laser battles. Breakfast this morning was no exception.

I just love them to bits. Having boys is SO FUN!

P.S. Sorry about the messy faces. We had chocolate chip muffins for breakfast. :)

Milk

David: "Mom, I need milk."
Me: "You have water, honey. Please drink that first."
David: "Mama, this water stinks! I need milk."

Finger Paints

I came across this finger paint recipe the other day and had to try it. I'm not certain that I did it right, but our preliminary tests prove that it's fun even if you screw it up. The directions say you should pour it into the containers. Our is...well, a tad thicker than "pourable". It's more like a gel paste than a liquid. I played with it some and it is still fun and it still works. I'm just not sure our results are what was intended!

Red, yellow, reeeeeally dark purple,
blue, orange, green.

Cuddly boy

David woke up bright and early this morning and came into my room to wake me. He asked to cuddle so I pulled him under the covers with me. He nestled himself right up by my side and passed out again. He is such a sweet boy.

:(

I just broke David's little heart by telling him he can't take Spider Bug to church with him. He is devastated.

Spider bugs

Introducing our new family pet: Spider Bug.

I found this little guy creeping his way across our living room this morning. I initially asked David to kill it for me {not that I'm scared- he was just standing closer. I usually do my own bug killing. It's very cathartic}, but before he could follow through I had an even better idea - save it for the boys to play with! David paraded him around the living room chanting "I got a bug in a jar" over and over. He thought it was pretty neat. Max eventually took a turn with it too and while he was also excited about it, his reaction was slightly different. He just giggled and shook it senseless. They shared their little bug friend back and forth for quite a while before they both got greedy and wanted him all the time. Then I found myself breaking up a brawl and calming meltdowns over a stinkin' bug. Sheesh. What boys!

We tried explaining to David that this kind of bug is called a spider, but he just wouldn't give in completely and kept calling him Bug. We compromised and he's now called Spider Bug.

Laundry Saturday

It's laundry day at the Sager's. I have mountains - and I mean mountains - to catch up on {I won't embarrass myself with actual load numbers}. I'm making good progress thanks to internet radio and Garth Brooks, but this is still going to take all day. Ugh. What a chore!

David's First Haircut

It had to happen sooner or later...for David it was later. ;) He finally got his very first ever haircut.

*sigh*

My boy is growing up. He cried and flailed a bit when we told him it was time for a haircut. It took some doing, but we finally got him calmed down enough to figure out that he was terrified of being cut. :) I just love this boy. I promised that I would only cut his hairs and not him. We talked about how hairs don't hurt when they are cut - just your skin hurts when cut. I promised I would be gentle and it wouldn't hurt at all. If it hurt all he had to say was "Ouch! Mama, stop!" and I would stop. The tears quickly faded and he sucked in a big boy breath and told me he was ready.

One pass with the clippers into the haircut and I was ready to cry. What was I doing to my poor baby?! These are his baby hairs we are talking about, people! They have never been cut before. These are the very hairs he was born with (ok, not really. He didn't have hair until 18 months). These are the very hairs he's had since 18 months old!! And I just cut them off. They are never coming back. Sure hair will grow, but it won't be his "from birth" hairs. These are special.

Daddy didn't seem so phased by the whole ordeal. He held David on his lap and talked about how he was a big boy because he got his hair cut - just like Daddy. David soaked it all in. He sat so very still while I cut and trimmed and went over it all again. The promise of a dum dum sucker was enough to keep him sitting patiently for as long as I pleased. When I was finally satisfied I let David look in the mirror and touch it. I don't think his hand left his head the rest of the night. I gave him a good buzz cut with a number 2 guard so it's nice and short and fuzzy.

I gave him a bath soon after to get all the little itchy hairs off him and he chatted the whole time about his big boy haircut. "My haircut is wet.", "You're washing my haircut.". Near the end of his bath I told him he was all clean and all the little hairs were off of him. Instantly he was in a near panic. He thought I washed his big boy haircut away and he had long hair again. I assured him it was still there, but he gave his head a pat just to be sure. :)

Yep, I saved a lock for his baby book.

When I'm not looking...

I prepared breakfast for little David and Max this morning. I left them happily eating in the dining room to go get dressed. In the time it took me to get my bathrobe off and a pair of pants and a shirt on he managed this...

He pulled his kitchen chair over to the computer, slid the keyboard shelf out, climbed on it and reached up to a candle I had lit on the top of the computer armoire. He pulled the candle down, blew it out and set it next to the moniter. Grrr.

Five and a half feet up should be high enough to keep things out of their reach!!!

With climbers, NOTHING is safe!

Today...

I ventured out with the boys this morning and took on the Target shopping trip I kept putting off. I bought a baby gift for a shower later this month, picked up some things for our vacation next month and got both boys new sneakers. David is now in size 10 and got to pick out his own shoes today. He chose light-up Lightning McQueen shoes with velcro straps that look like lightning bolts. This is his very first pair of "fun" shoes. Up til now I've been boring and chosen plain blue or black for him. He's pretty excited about them. Max is in size 6 now. I picked out some skateboarder style black shoes with graffiti on the side for him (just like David's last pair). He is absolutely crazy about walking around in them! I'm guessing they must hurt a tad less than the tight size 5's he just outgrew.

Also in big Max news, he learned to drink from a straw today! I shared my iced tea at lunch. He got off to an awkward start, but he eventually figured it out.

The husband is not feeling so hot today. He's coming down with a little cold that's making him feel sort of cruddy. He has class from 6-10pm tonight so I'm hoping the nap he's taking right now is going to perk him up a bit. It's just no fun to be sick when you have important things to do!

So far (I accidentally just typed fart. hehe), the worst parts about being pregnant are giving up coffee ('cuz I love me some coffee!) and every day from 1-5pm. :) The mornings are great around here - despite the lack of coffee - but come 1pm I really get to feeling crappy. The nausea, headaches and overwhelming fatigue all hit at once and in the matter of an hour I go from happy and laughing to flat on the couch. Max still takes a good 2hr nap every afternoon, but we've been struggling with David's naps. It's been inconsistent at best. I'd love to lay around and snooze all afternoon, but David's a little "mischievous" for me to feel comfortable taking my eyes off of him. We've fallen into somewhat of a routine where I lay on the couch and close my eyes and he watches a movie. I get some down time and he gets some Handy Manny or Finding Nemo. Yes, I use the TV as a babysitter. It's called survival. By dinnertime, I'm starting to feel better and the evening tends to go better after that.

David has a new favorite show. It's a Disney kid's show called Chuggington. I hate it. Without knowing what I was getting myself into, I turned on an episode OnDemand. I can't stand baby-ish kid shows. This one is done mostly in pastels and has rounded baby looking trains. Even worse (but for different reasons) than Thomas - and in my book that's waaaaaaay down there. Why did I do this to myself?? I just can't stand the retarded little stories and the annoying Chugga, Chugga Chugga Chuggington songs. And those blasted train tooty whistle things!!! Don't even get me started! Ugh. Yuck. Patooey. I just despise trains.

Have I mentioned that the afternoons leave me feeling a smidge grouchy and irritable too? Don't be surprised if you call, message, email or text and I ignore you completely. Trust me, it's better that way.

I'm pregnant!

I'm pregnant...again!

This has been a really good week for me. I got a new pair of shoes, we bought a replacement for our crappy and broken mini van and I found out I'm having a baby. Good stuff.

I pulled a repeat of little David's pregnancy test scenario. With both David and this baby, I tested at 6:30pm on a night that David was at class from 6-9pm. Both times I had to sit and wait to tell him for HOURS! It just about kills me. When he did get home, he took one look at my face and went "You're pregnant?!". I'm so not sly. ;) I never mean to test when he's away, but both times I really thought it was negative and just never expected it to be positive. I never really thought through what was going to happen if it came back with two pink lines.

I'm feeling good so far. I've been very short of breath lately, but I hear that's because my body is trying to take in extra oxygen for the baby (thank you Google - this is how I found out I was pregnant!). I'm also starting to get "pregnant skin". Yuck. I sure don't miss the oily skin and pimples after I give birth. I've been extra tired lately, but until the positive test, I never really connected that one to anything. I guess I just thought it was from Max not sleeping well and waking a lot at night and doing so much extra stuff during the day. Naps are so wonderful.

Holy cow. We are going to have THREE kids!

Chewy Granola Bars

I made these recently and they are delicious! Not nearly as healthy as the picture in the recipe looks, but tasty nonetheless. :)
  • 2 cups rice cereal
  • 2 cups oats
  • 1/2 cup raisins or other dried fruit (I used chocolate chips)
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
  • 1/2 cup light corn syrup
  • 1/2 cup peanut butter
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • cooking spray
In a large bowl, combine cereal, oats and raisins or chocolate chips*. In a small saucepan, mix brown sugar and corn syrup. Heat and stir until boiling. Remove from heat. Stir in vanilla and peanut butter. Pour over cereal mixture and mix well. Press firmly into a 9x13 inch baking pan that has been sprayed with cooknig spray. Cool and cut into 16 bars. Store in an air tight container.

*Note- If you want the chocolate chips melty and swirled into the bars, mix them in with the cereal then add the sauce. If you want the chocolate chips whole and chocolate chip like, add them after you mix the cereal and sauce.

"You're welcome"

Max just climbed up on our couch for the first time ever {it's not an easy one to get on - it's got a slipcover that makes things difficult}. David looked over at him and then immediately pushed him off the couch. As he peered over the edge at Max's stunned face smashed on the floor he said "you're welcome".

I don't think Max's shriek meant "thank you".

Grounded

We are having serious issues with our family van. :( The transmission has been giving us a hard time for a while now, but it hasn't been a big deal - it's nothing more than a few little hiccups. Until last night that is. We took a trip to Meijer {less than 5 minutes from our house}. We had so many problems with it that we had to pray the dumb thing there and back. We really thought it was going to break down at any second. That's not a fun feeling at all. :( We started having much more frequent and serious problems the end of last week, but last night was a breaking point. We're positive our poor girl is on her last leg. She just doesn't have many more miles in her.

Our other vehicle is David's teeny eeny 2 door Cavalier that he takes to and from work. I'm pretty sure 2 carseats in the backseat is actually impossible. I'm pretty sure fitting anything more than a purse in the backseat of that tin can is impossible {Ok, I'm being dramatic now. We did have one car seat in the back for quite a while as it was our only vehicle for over a year and a half one time. Two seats though would never work}. Our only option? Set up 2 emergency car shopping dates this week without the boys and get us a new van! Until then...

I'm grounded.

Robitussin

David LOVES this commercial because it has both monkeys and medicine. He is crazy about both. We talk about it every single time it airs.

Marker Face

How on Earth do other mamas keep their kiddos from doing this kid of stuff to themselves??

Yes, that's permenant marker! Ugh. Why does he feel a need to do this? There are only so many high places to put things! I can't just move the whole house out of their reach!!! I can only attach so many things to the ceilings. What is a mama of a climber to do?!?

On a somewhat related note, Max has been able to open the front door of our apartment since the day he started walking. What is a mama to do?!?

P.S. He's right-handed. Can you tell?

Ear piercing

That's my ear. That's my new cartilage piercing. Not much else to say. I'm just wild and crazy like that. ;)

P.S. This was taken the night I got it so yeah, if you were wondering, my ear does look freakishly red. :)

David and Dog being silly

I had Max's car seat inside yesterday making some adjustments. David thought I had just given him the coolest toy EVER. He played with that thing forever! After a good long while I heard this:

David:    "Mama, look! David silly. Dog silly too. Where's the camera?"
Me:     "You may not have the camera, but I'll take a picture for you. What do you need?"
David:    "Right here. Dog in Maxi's car seat. That silly. Take a picture."
*camera snaps*
David: "Mama blog it? On the computer?"

Perhaps I blog too much. Even my poor kids know that our silliest pictures go straight to my blog. But nevertheless...here's Dog being silly in Max's car seat. :)
