For my mom

David asked to make a craft today so I gave him the craft box and told him to have at it. It reminded me of the junk masterpieces he creates at your house. :o) Enjoy.

Sick Mama

So I've been sick for several days now. I HATE being sick. I mean, no, it's not fun to feel yucky, but being the mama of this house and the one that generally just keeps things running it's important that I stay on my feet and healthy. When I'm sick, the whole house shuts down to the very most basic functions and goes into survival mode. It's not pretty. We eat from paper plates, use disposable diapers and avoid laundry at all costs. My kids watch more TV than kids should in a day and the hub's idea of fending for himself and the kids often means Kraft mac and cheese or take out.

I'm feeling somewhat better today (finally) so my goal is trying to reclaim the house. Not an easy task. I'm contending with a sink that looks like this....

and a counter top overrun with trash and dirty dishes....
and a table full of last night's unfinished dinner.

I think I'm in over my head. :/

The Cast {how we make it work}

Keeping an adventurous and curious 17 month old little boy from getting wet or messy is no easy task! I've had my work cut out for me. He doesn't seem to mind that it's there most of the time, but he is really missing his splash time in the bathtub. It's quite the challenge to keep the plastic bag on and get him clean all at the same time. Bath time is by far the worst part of this whole ordeal.

It took him a few days to get used to sleeping with it and not eating with that hand, but he's way past that bothering him now. He's been moving on with life as usual. 12 days down...8 more to go!!

We trap his arm under his high chair tray for mealtime

I cut the elastic band off the top and the toe off the bottom
of a men's tube sock to make a cast protector. It keeps the
cast from scratching anyone/anything and it can't get
messy this way.

But he's still a happy boy. I told him to say "cheese"
for Monga so......"Cheese!"

His very most favorite thing right now is trains so I
drew a choo-choo on his cast for him. :)

Little David recently got his hands on my camera. It was sort of funny to look back on all the things he thought worthy of getting their picture taken. Also surprising how well he did. He's got a pretty artistic eye if you ask me. :o)

Max Updates

This morning started bright and early for me. So early, actually, that it wasn’t even bright out yet. I try to avoid 8am appointments at all costs, but this time it wasn’t left up to me. I felt surprisingly awesome though. Both boys slept all night without waking which is something that hasn’t happened in nearly two weeks now. I got just 7 hours of sleep last night, but still bounced out of bed wide awake when the alarm went off. That is Jesus, folks. Pure Jesus. This pregnant mama likes her sleep. I don’t remember the last time I woke up and was instantly awake like that – especially after only 7 hours of sleep. I seem to be requiring much more of that these days.

Grandma Sager came to stay with David while I took Max to his appointment. I didn’t want to have to worry about David getting into things or being scared while I had my hands full with Max. David was super stoked about having his Monga play with just him so it was a win for everybody.

Max handled the appointment really well. Check-in and registration went smoothly. He ate some delish looking Apple Jacks while we waited to be called back. We met with Dr. Woznick and went over his x-rays from yesterday. She said without a doubt he’d be needing a long arm cast (to properly immobilize it and to prevent him from simply slipping out of a short, straight cast). The nurse was called back in to apply his bright green cast from his knuckles to his bicep. He didn’t love having to lay down and be still and REALLY didn’t love her wrapping his arm in padding and gauze, but he calmed down enough to watch her put the green part on.

He is not to get his cast wet or messy. If I choose to put him in a tub of water for a bath I need to cover his arm with a plastic bag. Swimming is out for now. I need to cover his hand with a rubber glove or pin it under the high chair tray for mealtime. Food could easily get stuck in the rough surface of the cast or worse yet it could get underneath the cast and be moldy and smelly. The doctor understands what a challenge all this is with a 17 month old, but it’s what is necessary.

We go back on August 2nd to get his cast removed. They are going to take more x-rays to make sure it’s healed correctly and completely then he’ll be released to go back to normal.

Ready to head into the hospital

They had a basket of animals and cars waiting for him
in the exam room.

Also in the exam room - a super fun hand
chair!

We got to pick our cast color

Getting his cast put on

nearly finished!

The finished product

It does not affect his ability to watch
TV in any way. :)

Max's Boo-Boo

On Sunday July 3rd we had a picnic and swim-rific afternoon in South Haven with our friends. While we were changing into swimsuits and lathering up with sunscreen, Max wandered off and, in true Max fashion, decided to climb the biggest, most scary slide he could find. Ok, it was the only slide around, but it is very big and scary. He made it up the steps just fine, but struggled with the coming down part. One leg went down the slide before him and the other got stuck behind him. Someone reached out to steady him, but it just scared him and he jerked away causing him to fall all awkward-like off the other side of the slide. He stretched out his left arm to catch himself, but couldn’t get his right arm down fast enough. His full weight – all 28 pounds of him – came down on his bent-backwards left wrist. He screamed bloody murder and Daddy was close by (but unfortunately not close enough to keep him from falling) to pick him up. He held his left arm as Daddy brought him to me. We dismissed the giant, non-Max-like fit off as being super tired from not having a nap that day and settled him down. He quit crying and went on his way. He played fabulously the rest of the day and acted as if nothing happened.
Monday, Tuesday and most of Wednesday went on as normal so I wasn’t overly concerned. By the end of the week though he was really favoring that wrist and protecting it. By the beginning of this week that turned into bawling his little eyes out every time it got touched. He’s very sensitive to us holding his hand, putting his bent wrist through his shirt sleeves and catching himself when falling (which he does a lot). He’s still using it for everyday tasks like eating, holding Monkey and picking up toys, but he’s very careful about how he moves.

Since it seemed to get worse instead of better I took him to the Ped’s office today. His nurse practitioner was super sweet and gentle as she examined him, but she decided to make a complete diagnosis she’d need X-rays. He wailed his way through 3 x-rays while Tummy Baby and I waited safely in the other room. After another short wait, the doctor was able to confirm that he broke his arm (it’s a distal radial fracture for you medical types who thrive on big words). He was given a splint to immobilize his wrist until we can see the Orthopedic Specialist that we’ve been referred to. The doctor said she suspects he’ll end up in a cast to ensure that it heals properly, but we don’t know that for sure at this point.

But don’t go feeling bad for him! For now, he couldn’t care less that he’s hurt. He’s being a real trooper. After the first 5 minutes he forgot about the splint and went about business as usual. He’s been slightly cranky and clingy and has been waking more frequently at night than normal in the last week or two. I guess that could be contributed to pain, but he’s a mama’s boy and, at this age, it could just be a phase he’s going through. I’m not convinced that he’s in miserable pain the majority of the time.
Do keep us in your prayers though, folks! Having a baby in a cast doesn’t sound like much fun to me – especially since he just developed a HUGE love for swimming. He likely won’t be in it for long if he does have to have it though. Babies heal very quickly. In just the week and a half since his fall, the doctor could see new growth and healing taking place near that fracture.

Prenatal Check-up

I am 23 weeks today. I had another prenatal appointment this afternoon. Everything looks fantastically normal. Baby's heartrate was 148bpm. I've gained 11 pounds so far. Blah, blah, blah. Nothing great to report.

Oh! We have picked a name - Titus Matthew. We wanted a strong, biblical, but unique name so we settled on Titus. Matthew is in honor of a very dear friend that Dave and I lost 4 1/2 years ago in a car accident.

Oh! And I have a glucose test coming. I have to complete it between 24-28 weeks. It's a 2 hour long, fasting, Glucola filled nasty fest. Not looking forward to it.

Cloth pull

The back story -- I got the crafting itch this afternoon. A while back, when Max was still a teeny guy, I made myself 2 Moby wraps. I decided that they were too much work to wrap and adjust and get just right so often I just resorted back to my Baby Bjorn carrier. It was simple and quick and I could easily get a sleepy baby out without a lot of hassle. The only downside is that it really hurts my back. It's not designed to be the most supportive or comfortable thing I guess. I want to love my homemade Moby, but I just can't. Then I saw the Baby K'Tan. Actually, I found a post at Crafty Mama that shows you how to make one for super cheap (and easy!) so I figured I'd take one of my unused Mobys and repurpose it into a Baby K'Tan. But before I got to the sewing stage, I got distracted online and found a fun little game to use up my crafting scraps (you can find that post here. ) That was a very long-winded way of getting to my point. Now on to it...

You take a piece or two of fabric (mine is 110" by 5") and stuff it into an empty wipe container. Poke one end up through the whole and let your babe have hours of fun pulling it out repeatedly. It kept David busy for better than 15 minutes. I kid you not. It never fails to amaze me how easily amused kids can be. :) And it's much better than their new tag-team trick of emptying every wipe container in the house of hundreds of wipes and leaving them on the dirty floor for me to find later. :)

Stuff it in the box

Poke the end through the hole

And TA-DA! You're ready to play!

Now pull the fabric out as fast as you can

And smile about how awesome you are. :)

AHHHHHHH!!!!!!! It came!!

David finally has his diploma!!!!!

He finished his associate's work in April. It took nearly 3 months to get to us, but we have it now. It's framed, hanging on the wall and it's gorgeous. :D

Today I want to share....

The crazy socks and ridiculous amounts of Red Bull that David stocked up on for the bachelor party he threw yesterday....

My lime green toes...

And this little guy that I found on the window after this morning's storm...

That is all.

Bugs

Why is my son crawling around on the floor wearing a dirty shirt, no pants and chasing a bug? Because that's what little boys do. :D

P.S. That's the first bug he's ever had the chance to catch by himself. Usually David gets to them first. This day's going down in the baby book under "Important Firsts".

Funny stuff

Highlight of my day so far: David telling Max that if he doesn't pray before he eats his lunch it will make his food hurt his tummy. Then Max bursting into tears and shouting "Jesus!" over and over. :)

Independence Day bonk

Max got running a little too fast this morning and couldn't stop himself before he ran into a wall. The poor little guy took the corner of our living room wall right in the face. :(
"cheese!"

Can you believe how big that goose egg is?!?

Cookouts

Thank you, Jesus, for summer weekends, charcoal grills and baby back ribs!
